Delmarva OKs land-based wind power deal

In a pre-emptive strike against a proposed Bluewater Wind contract, Delmarva Power has signed contracts with a land-based wind farm provider for up to 100 megawatts of power at any given time.

Delmarva announced today it had signed the contract with Annapolis, Md.-based Synergics Wind Energy for up to 100 megawatts of energy and renewable energy credits from wind farms in western Maryland. The 20-year contracts would begin service in 2009.

The contracts have not yet been made public. They are subject to approval by the Public Service Commission.

Delmarva has criticized the 300 megawatt Bluewater offshore wind power contract as too expensive. Land-based wind power is cheaper, but offshore advocates say it’s the only way to provide utility-scale renewable electricity on the built-up East Coast.

The state Senate is considering ordering Delmarva to sign a 25-year contract with Bluewater.
