Three tractor-trailers carrying blades for wind turbines were on U.S. 30 west through Chambersburg, Pa., on Monday when it was discovered the loads were too long to make it around the fountain on Memorial Square.
The blades, each more than 100 feet long, were being shipped from the manufacturer near Philadelphia to a wind farm near Mount Storm, W.Va., according to the driver of one of the escort vehicles.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation normally routes the wind generator loads south on Interstate 81 to Interstate 70, the driver said, but PennDOT advised the drivers to get off the interstate and take U.S. 30, the driver said.
The trucks were stopped for more than an hour, closing down one lane of traffic before it was determined they had the room to make a left turn south onto U.S. 11.
