Call for ELDC to create own energy

A controversial call has come for East Lindsey District Council to generate its own on-site wind energy.

At an executive board meeting, Burgh le Marsh representative Coun Neil Cooper suggested a start could be made by installing a wind turbine outside the authority’s Manby HQ.

“Significant savings could me made to heating and lighting bills if we adopted wind energy,” he maintained.

During the debate, colleagues noted some businesses – for instance Tesco – were investigating the installation of turbines.

Coun Brian Burnett revealed, when he was portfolio holder for finance, he had authorised officers to carry out the costings of investing in renewable energy at the council’s HQ.

However the request was either put on hold or never made public.

“It’s well worth looking at again,” enthused Coun Burnett, who is a member of the Green Party.

However, Coun Colin Davie – the current portfolio holder for finance – is unlikely to pursue the idea because he is a founder-member of LOOT, Lincolnshire Opposed to Onshore Turbines.

“I don’t think our chief executive would like a turbine outside his office window,” he warned.

Chief executive Nigel Howells grinned at this obervation but refrained from any comment.
