CHARLTON— The hilltop campus of Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School is one step closer to housing wind turbines.
Superintendent-Director David P. Papagni recently reported a three-year electricity cost of nearly $1 million and estimated a 60 percent annual cost savings with turbine energy.
In February, the Southern Worcester County Regional Vocational School Committee approved a feasibility study and awarded an $80,000 contract to Sustainable Energy Developments, contingent upon receiving half of the cost from a state grant.
Sen. Stephen M. Brewer, D-Barre, announced last week that Bay Path was awarded the $40,000 grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative Renewable Energy Trust.
The study will determine whether there is enough wind on the property, the potential energy yield and the appropriate size for one or more windmills.
The two models under consideration range in cost from $1.6 million to $2.2 million, installed.
An avian, noise, shadow and visual impact analysis will be included in the study, which is expected to be completed in about one year.
