VIETNAM – Bach Long Vi Youth Island authorities in northern Hai Phong City have let the country’s first wind electricity farm fall into disuse since it broke down two years ago.
The US$2 million wind farm on the island stopped operating in early 2006 after technicians from Spain, who had overseen the project, returned to their country.
The island’s source of renewable energy worked during a three month testing and over one year’s guarantee period under the control of the Spanish experts.
The island’s administration said they had invited a group of technicians from Hanoi, Le Quy Don Technical University, also known as the Military Technical Academy of Vietnam, to make a survey and repairs late last year, but the station was still inactive.
Experts from the two Spanish-owned companies that provided the equipment and acted as consultants had agreed to visit the island, the authorities said, without giving a date.
Several projects on Bach Long Vi Youth Island, including abalone farms and a plant, which processes sea water into fresh water, had been delayed or failed due to the wind farm breakdown.
Local residents are also subject to electricity shortages.
The wind electricity farm was established as a “base” for the island’s economic and social development.
