IPL plans 100-megawatt wind farm

Indianapolis Power and Light hopes to become the latest Indiana utility to tap into the power of the wind.

IPL announced plans Thursday for a 100-megawatt wind farm in Benton County in the state’s northwestern corner that the company says will power about 24,000 residential homes.

State regulators must approve IPL’s proposed Hoosier Wind Project, which the company says is also contingent on Congress extending a federal renewable energy tax credit.

The Indianapolis-based utility has 468,000 central Indiana customers. Its proposed wind farm is at least the fourth commercial wind farm planned for the state.

Next month, a 130-megawatt wind farm being developed by Orion Energy, also in Benton County, will become the first of those to come online.
