Land secured for major new P.E.I. wind farm

A German company is applying for environmental approval of a 100-megawatt wind farm, after securing land leases near Anglo Tignish in western Prince Edward Island.

NewEn’s project would cost an estimated $200 million to build and include as may as 50 turbines. It would be slightly bigger than the wind farm at West Cape, which will generate 99 megawatts when it is completed.

The West Cape project has run into complaints regarding the placement of transmission lines. Some are worried the overhead high-voltage lines near their homes will harm their health, and others don’t want to see more power lines along the Confederation Trail.

Company spokesman Jamie Ballem said NewEn plans to bury the transmission cable that would run to Maritime Electric’s main grid.

Environmental hearings aren’t expected until next year, with construction planned to begin in 2010.
