Windfarm opponents' disgust at arson attack

Opponents of a windfarm near Marshland St James have voiced their disgust at last Saturday’s arson attack at the home of one of their supporters.

The committee of Fenland Landscape Against Turbines was holding a fundraising table-top auction in Marshland Jubilee Hall at the time of the fire.

The victim of the attack, West Norfolk borough councillor David Markinson, was acting as auctioneer and was on the rostrum when he was told of the blaze.

The chairman of FLAT, Lyndon Mason, said the auction was a great success and raised more than £1,200 for the fighting fund.

“Unfortunately, the evening was marred by a serious arson attack on Cllr Markinson’s property,” he said.

The committee extended its sympathy to Cllr Markinson and his wife, Sally.

Mr Mason said: “We are disgusted that someone took advantage of his goodwill in helping our fundraising activity.

“We hope the police will be able to quickly find the culprits and bring them to justice.” He thanked everyone who donated lots for the auction, helped run the event or bought items on the night.

“The event was so popular that we will almost certainly be holding another auction later in the year,” he added.

Three wooden stables and a tackroom were destroyed in the fire at Cllr Markinson’s home in Rands Drove.

The cost of the damage was estimated at £30,000 to £50,000. The blaze was started deliberately and may have been ignited by a petrol firebomb.
