No word on wind power; Cumberland on deck for announcement?

There’s still no timeframe for when Nova Scotia Power will be announcing future wind projects in Cumberland County.

Corporation spokesperson Margaret Murphy said Nova Scotia Power is committed to adding 240 megawatts of wind energy and that additional contracts will be announced when they are signed.

“We expect that we will be announcing more wind power agreements very soon and we’re continuing to work toward that,” said Murphy, adding that it would only be speculative to say where those projects will be located.

There is plently of speculation that following the announcement of the Brown’s Mountain project in Pictou and Antigonish counties, that both Cumberland and Digby counties would be up next.

It’s believed a power announcement was planned for Amherst last month, possibly involving the Acciona and Wind Dynamics proposal, but the press conference was called off for unknown reasons.

At present, the power corporation is at 180 megawatts and has 56 to go.
The latest announcement at Brown’s Mountain was for 60 megawatts to be generated by 30 turbines.

There remain several proposals on the table in Cumberland County including Atlantic Wind Power’s Gulf Shore project, Invenergy Canada’s Fort Lawrence project, the Wind Dynamics-Acciona project on the marsh near Amherst and Higgins Mountain-Rodney put forward by 3G Energy.
