The announcement that Molokai Ranch will shut down next week is causing some scrambling.
The owners of Kaheawa Wind Farm on Maui said they will try to bring community groups together soon to arrange a purchase of the ranch.
The wind farm is willing to pay $50 million for the right to put windmills on parts of the open land.
However, unless community groups organize and find other investors, the $50 million will not be enough.
Gov. Linda Lingle said the community will have to look for other sources of economic development to maintain the island’s economy when the ranch closes.
