With the announcement of the latest wind farm project in Nova Scotia, there’s still no word on the status of several proposals in Cumberland County.
“Anything I would say now would be purely speculative. All I can say is there was one announcement and another is imminent,” Nova Scotia Power spokesperson Margaret Murphy said.
Murphy would not say what announcement is next pointing out that the power corporation and many of the companies involved have strict reporting rules they must follow on how they can release news.
There was speculation about a power announcement in Amherst last week, possibly regarding the Wind Dynamics’ proposal behind the Wandlyn Inn. That press conference was never held and Murphy said she’s not aware one was even planned.
There are several proposals in Cumberland County, one of which – Higgins Mountain – has already been confirmed it did not make the cut. Other projects include 3G Energy’s Rodney proposal, Atlantic Wind Power’s Gulf Shore project, Invenergy Canada’s plan to erect a wind farm in Fort Lawrence and Wind Dynamics’ project on the marsh near Amherst.
Last week, Nova Scotia Power announced it was entering into an agreement to purchase energy from a wind farm on Nuttby Mountain near Truro. The project, to be operated by EarthFirst Canada Inc., will see 22 turbines erected. The 45-megawatt farm will be capable of producing enough energy to power about 15,000 homes.
In early February, Renewable Energy Services Ltd. was awarded the contract to add 11 turbines at its current site in Port Hawkesbury.
The project is the first in a series of anticipated agreements that will ultimately see Nova Scotia Power purchase about 240 megawatts of wind-generated power from private firms by 2010 – enough electricity for about 60,000 homes.
