Proposed power line in Oswego County

The Upstate NY Power Corporation is looking to install dozens of single-line poles through 36 miles of farm land in Oswego and Jefferson Counties. An attorney from the company met with land owners, Tuesday night.

Upstate NY Power wants to install 77 wind turbines on Galloo Island, just 12 miles off the shoreline of Sackets Harbor. The energy would be transferred from single pole lines that would straddle along I-81, from Hounsfield in Jefferson County to Parish in Oswego County.

”I’m sure some people are opposed, I’m sure some are saying send me the money and I’m going to leave anyway,” said Dick De Graff, a local farmer.

Property owners are being offered about $4,000 per four acres. If they don’t want to go through with it, they don’t have to. Upstate NY Power told them they would re-route their transmission line.

“If it comes through our property, they’re going to cut our farm right in two. And it’s going to lose value,” said Nancy Forbes, from Pulaski.

The Public Service Commission has to approve this proposal. It’s going to schedule a few more public hearings in the upcoming months.
