Construction firms expected to tender for a project to construct a wind turbine at Olympic Park today toured the site to learn more about the project.
Labelled London’s “green beacon” by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the 130-metre high turbine is expected to generate enough electricity to power 1000 homes.
The turbine will be located in Eton Manor, to the north of the Olympic Park, and will begin construction later this year.
The ODA held an industry open day today and will close tenders for the project on April 9. A successful contractor is expected to be announced by the summer.
ODA infrastructure director Simon Wright said: “Sustainability runs through all we are doing and the use of renewable energy is key part of our plans to provide a whole new backbone of services, fuelling not just six weeks of world class sporting action, but also the lasting regeneration of the area for many years to come.”
The turbine is expected to be fully operational by 2010 and will stay on-site after the Games where it will be linked to local networks to provide power to homes and facilities for its 20 year lifespan.
