FPL won't build wind turbines on public land

Florida Power & Light Co. said today it will abandon plans to build three wind-power turbines on public land in St. Lucie County.

Instead, the utility will pursue its plans to build six other turbines on land it owns at the St. Lucie Nuclear Plant on Hutchinson Island.

In talks with reporters today, FPL officials cited residents’ concerns about using public lands for the 400-foot turbines, which would have been built on Blind Creek Park.

The St. Lucie County Commission was scheduled to vote tonight on whether to send a letter recommending against the Blind Creek Park plan to the state’s Acquistion and Restoration Council

FPL hopes to get approval for the other six turbines by the end of this year and being the eight-month construction process early in 2009.
