Exclusion zone around wind farm after gales

An exclusion zone is in place around a Furness wind farm after gale force winds battered Cumbria.

Pencil Lane at Marton has been closed off since Monday evening as engineers work to fix a mechanical failure on a turbine at Askam and Ireleth Wind Farm.

Power Company E.ON requested that police cordon off the area as a safety precaution before the predicted high winds arrived.

Today a spokeswoman for E.ON said: “Because of the weather we are experiencing we have not been able to carry out the work.”

E.ON said the road block may be in place until Friday.

The spokeswoman said: “It’s a safety precaution.”

Around 600 Cumbrian homes were left without power today after 60mph winds brought down power lines.

Affected areas included Grange, Lowick Bridge and Haverthwaite, and Holker, and Seascale on the west coast.

United Utilities says it will take some time to fix the problem as engineers are having to walk the route to find the damage.

A spokeswoman for United Utilities said: “The plan is to get things back to normal later on today.”

The county is still on flood alert.

Strong waves left debris scattered along the coast road overnight.

Rocks and stones were thrown on to the A5087 near Goadsbarrow as the sea pounded the shoreline.

Ulverston police sergeant Rob Lampard said this their didn’t appear to have caused any damage.

There was also flooding at the Roa Island causeway.

The police have put out signs to warn drivers and highways

officials are expected to come and clean up the mess later today.

A spokesman for the Met Office said winds of 64mph have been recorded at Walney.

Police say a Renault lorry was blown over at a car park at West Shore.

A window was also smashed at Blackbutts Lane.

Barrow firefighters were called out to make a Tesco sign safe at North Road Barrow at around 7.30pm.

The crew closed part of the road while they removed a section of the sign.

Police say temporary metal fencing was blown down at the new B&Q which is being constructed in Hindpool Road.
