The Yakima County Planning Commission recommends building several wind measuring towers near Sunnyside.
This could be the first step towards energy-producing wind turbines in Yakima County.
The towers would measure the wind power in the county for a year. If the wind averages above seventeen miles an hour, Yakima could be a prime place for wind turbines.
Wind power is the fastest growing energy market in the world.
The company Northwest Wind Partners has proposed putting up four wind testing towers. The towers are 200 foot poles that are 10 inches in diameter. The proposed sites are all on cattle grazing land.
“All the measuring devices are fairly remotely located,” says Erica Mignone with the Yakima County Planning Commission. “They’re unlikely to have any impact on anyone except the landowners.”
Thursday morning there will be a public hearing on the wind towers. The final decision will be up to the hearing examiner.
Mignone says she hasn’t heard any opposition to the towers so far.
