Plan for wind turbines on the Riviera

Wind turbines could soon be spinning near a stretch of coast better known for attracting tourists.

Torbay Council is considering putting a turbine close to the English Riviera between the fishing town of Brixham and the more sedate Churston.

It is all part of the council’s pledge to fight global warming and the details are contained in a new draft strategy.

A general area of land close to Torquay has been identified as the best area to put a 100-metre turbine or a cluster of 20-metre turbines.

The suggestion is that the wind farm could become a permanent fixture on the South Devon landscape.

The council’s draft Climate Change Strategy contains a range of ideas based on the premise that man-made global warming is leading to a change in climate.

The strategy predicts long hotter summers and less cloud cover for South Devon, but with stormier winters, flooding and a 90cm sea rise. It is thought 1,400 homes in Torbay could benefit from turbines.

The plans are being put out to public consultation until March 28, when the Cabinet will vote on them. If agreed, it would pave the way for Torbay to identify a site as early as next year.
