US deal boosts troubled windmill company

Vestas has landed a deal with energy giant E.ON worth over one billion kroner, although the company’s wind turbines continue to experience construction and maintenance problems

One of the world’s largest energy providers has chosen to overlook wind turbine company Vestas’ recent problems and has ordered more than a hundred of the structures for its US-based operations, reported financial daily Børsen on Monday.

Although the actual price tag was not revealed by Vestas, the deal was estimated at DKK 1.4 billion by calculating the cost per megawatt of the 109 V82-1,65 MW-wind turbines purchased by German-based E.ON.

Vestas has been the focus of less positive news recently, as several of its wind turbine owners have reported serious malfunctions, with a few of the structures having collapsed over the past two weeks.

Declan Flanagan, head of E.ON’s Climate & Renewables division for North America, said Vestas’ long-term track record is nonetheless solid.

‘We’re very much looking forward to our co-operation with the Vestas project. It’s a good addition to our portfolio,’ Flanagan stated in the company’s press release on the deal.

The wind turbines are expected to be up and running in the US by mid-2009.
