An action group has been set up to fight plans to develop a wind farm with up to eight turbines.
Brownview Energy Ltd has submitted a document to Hambleton and Stockton councils about the scheme being set up on land between Seamer and Hilton, near Yarm.
Residents have raised concerns over the proposals and say more research should be carried out before anything is given the go-ahead.
Each wind turbine is expected to generate more than 5m kilowatts a year. Initial surveys by the company indicated the site has the capacity to cater for up to 8,000 homes.
Dr Leo Hicks, from Hilton, said: “The choice of this site is ill-conceived in that it is much too close to the two villages concerned and out of keeping with the landscape.
“There are possible environment affects to wildlife and livestock. More research is needed in this area.”
He added: “There is grave concern about this proposed development, and an action group has now been formed to fight it.”
Jeff Corrigan, managing director of Broadview Energy, said the company hoped to work closely with residents and landowners to consider their views in the design of the project.
Public exhibitions are taking place over the coming weeks. If the application was successful, work would not be expected to begin before 2011.
