St. Lucie's County Attorney recommends commission discuss FPL's turbine plan soon

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – County Attorney Dan McIntyre is recommending commissioners discuss Florida Power & Light Co.’s wind turbine proposal at a meeting in late March.

Commission Chair Joe Smith said no decision on when to discuss turbines has been made, but commissioners might discuss when to schedule the hearing during one of two commission meetings Tuesday. The regular commission meeting occurs at 9 a.m. and an informal commission meeting takes place at 1:30 p.m.

McIntyre told County Administrator Doug Anderson in a memo that the commission should discuss the project prior to the state Acquisition and Restoration Council talking about it during its April meeting. He recommended a meeting in “late March” at 6 p.m., which would make the hearing March 18, according to the commission’s current schedule.

He said commissioners should make it the only item on the agenda in light of the high public interest, the memo states.

FPL wants to place nine wind turbines on Hutchinson Island, six on its own property at the St. Lucie Nuclear Plant and three on state-owned land managed by the county at Blind Creek Park.
