Wind farm proposed for south shore

HUMBER ARM SOUTH – The winds of change could be blowing for Humber Arm South in the Bay of Islands.

A wind farm has been proposed for an area off the forestry road near Clark’s Brook and the power line.

Town Clerk Marion Evoy said the town’s development regulations need to be amended before the practice of wind farming is allowed, so the town has scheduled a meeting for Thursday at 7 p.m.

“Right now there’s a tower in there and they’re measuring the wind,” Evoy said. “We have to put in a discretionary use in our rural zone and that’s where it is.”

At the same meeting, the town will also look at residential, tourism accommodations and recreational uses allowable for the Frenchman’s Head area.

She said there’s an application for condominium development in Frenchman’s Cove.

“It won’t go ahead if we don’t have people phoning to say they’re coming,” Evoy said. “Our planner is planning on being in the area. We’ve had a few people call, that’s all. We put it in the newsletter today (Friday) so that’s gone out to 650 residents.”

For more information, or to reserve time to outline a concern, call 789-2981. She said if there are no representations registered concerning the amendments, the meeting will be cancelled.
