Power company merger debated

The proposed takeover of Rochester Gas and Electric’s parent company by a company from Spain is not getting unanimous support locally.

At a public hearing Thursday, people opposed to the merger said they fear higher energy rates.

Jerry Borkholder has dealt with Iberdola in Hamlin, and he accuses the company of using its considerable clout to grab government dollars for unproven wind turbines.

“This is such a big issue,” Berkholder said. “And no one has been interested in listening to what it does to small towns. These guys come in and they pit neighbor against neighbor, husband against wife. They come in–and all they see is green.”

The proposed merger did get some important support at that hearing, from Kodak and the Rochester Business Alliance.
