Wind power proceeds in Pecos

The same week that the Jasper County Commissioners Court voted to file a lawsuit to get out of a contract with Pecos Renewable Energy, BP and Energy North America announced Feb. 4 a joint venture to build the first phase of the Sherbino Wind Farm in Pecos County.

Padoma Wind Power, the parent company of Energy North America, says the project will be a 150 megawatt farm built on 9,000 acres of mesa lands used primarily for sheep and cattle grazing.

Jasper owns adjacent land that was deeded to the county for the purpose of creating revenue for the schools. In 2003, Jasper entered into a contract with Pecos Renewable Energy to explore the possibility of developing wind farms on the land.

County Judge Mark Allen said, “The court has given Pecos Renewable Energy several years to accomplish what they had promised in 2003. However, there does not appear to have been any real progress made since the original contracts were signed.

“There is currently a great deal of wind generation development going on around Jasper County’s school land, and we are hoping that we have not missed the boat. Pecos Renewable Energy has had ample opportunity in the past few years to provide Jasper County proof that they were sincere about developing the land for wind generation use, and it is now time to seriously consider the fact that PRE may not have the ability to live up to its initial promises.”
