Plans to build a windfarm in south Leicestershire have been shelved, it has emerged.
Consultants working for Irish company Airtricity today confirmed the company was not pressing ahead with its plans east of Kibworth.
Villages from Great Glen to the Langtons were alerted in October 2006 that Welsh consultants Dulas, working for Airtricity, was looking at two potential sites in area.
The first plot stretched from Burton Overy down to Kibworth Harcourt, with a second, larger plot running south from Carlton Curlieu to the outskirts of Tur Langton. Letters were sent to farmers and landowners to gauge interest.
Airtricity said it was considering erecting an undisclosed number of 100-metre high wind turbines.
Following the feedback from individuals and parish councils, the project has been mothballed.
Dulas spokesman Ian Draisey said today: “At the present time, Airtricity have no plans to progress the windfarm site we were appraising for them in the Tur Langton area.”
He declined to comment on why Airtricity had decided to shelve the project.
Tur Langton parish councillor Chris Weston said: “We have received a letter saying they are not going ahead at the present time and we welcome that decision with obvious pleasure.”
Two other wind farm projects are still being assessed in the Harborough area.
A plan by E.on goes on display in Naseby village hall tomorrow from 2pm to 8pm.
The company is looking to erect wind turbines in the grounds of Kelmarsh Hall, four miles south of Market Harborough.
Nuon Renewables is also looking to create a wind farm on land between Walcote and Swinford, near Lutterworth.
