Community landowners have been given the go-ahead to build a small wind farm that they hope will generate income and jobs, as well as power.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council), which is currently fighting for a 176- turbine development – the biggest in Europe – to be built in Lewis, yesterday approved a three-turbine farm on Harris.
The North Harris Estate, including 116 crofts and 22 townships, covers the northern half of the island, with a population of 705. The North Harris Trust bought the 55,000-acre estate in 2003 for £4.5 million. It proposes to erect three 86m turbines at Monan, three miles north-west of Tarbert and below Clisham hill.
The turbines will affect a national scenic area, but will be hidden from view by the mountainous terrain.
It is hoped the wind farm will generate up to £150,000 a year for local projects.
