Acquisition of farmland opposed

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada unit of the Samajwadi Party (SP) has opposed the Government’s move to acquire agricultural land for the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) project and the thermal and wind power projects near Udupi.

Executive president of the unit S.P. Chengappa, in a press release, claimed that the Government had started the process of acquiring 5,041 acres of farmland at Permude, Kuttettur, Bajpe, Tenka Ekkar, Kalavaru, Thokuru, Delantabettu and Bala villages in Mangalore taluk for the MSEZ project. This would affect 15,000 farmers.

Mr. Chengappa said that efforts were being made to acquire 1,200 acres near Padubidri for a wind energy project. If agricultural land in the villages of Mangalore, Udupi, Karkala and Bantwal taluks was acquired for the proposed Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region projects, the area would soon become “concrete jungles”.
