Verve plans fewer turbines for wind farm expansion

Verve Energy has updated the design of a proposed expansion to Albany’s wind farm and now plans to add six, rather than seven, turbines to the existing 12.

The company wants to increase the number of turbines to 18, giving the wind farm the capacity to supply up to 90 per cent of Albany’s energy needs.

Project manager Daniel Thompson says the new turbines will be the same size as the existing ones, but will provide about 30 per cent more power.

Mr Thompson says Verve will hold a community open day in May to gauge the level of public support for the $35 million project.

“The machine that we had proposed to use originally is no longer manufactured,” he said.

“The later machine is actually a greater capacity which means we can have less turbines installed, which I think is a good outcome.”
