Questions greet power line plan

A proposal to run a power line through southern Jefferson County drew questions – and concern – Thursday night.

“I’m not hearing a lot of support. People wish it weren’t coming through,” said Jay Matteson, of the Jefferson County Agricultural Development Corp., which sponsored the meeting.

Upstate New York Power, which wants to build 77 wind turbines on Galloo Island, (west of Sackets Harbor), is asking landowners in Jefferson and Oswego counties to allow electric transmission lines on their property.

Thursday night’s meeting was held to help landowners understand their options. More than 130 people attended the session.

What you could hear at the meeting was reluctance.

“The drawbacks are…health concerns, animal concerns and when I go to sell the property whether it’s going to be appealing for another owner,” said Patrick Grimshaw, a dairy farmer in the Town of Henderson.

That said, the people at the meeting are realists, and understand the line may be coming.

“We’re going to take a look at it,” Matteson said.
