Thumbs up

Thumbs up to the state of New York setting guidelines on how the ecological impact of proposed wind farms must be measured.

The heavily taxpayer-subsidized wind farms being developed around the state can, indeed, be a way to harness wind energy, but they can also have profoundly negative effects on the environment.

For example, if, as has happened in other states, multitudes of insect-eating bats are killed by the rotating blades and farmers then have to resort to chemicals to protect their crops from the bugs, we have not gained a lot in terms of the environment.

New York needs to set standards for tests we can trust in order to make the best decisions.
