Ranchers are proposing a 500 megawatt wind-power plant southeast of Flagstaff, one of the ranch owners told environmental groups on Thursday.
Jack Metzger of the Flying M Ranch briefly discussed plans for the Grapevine Canyon Wind Project on a conference call with Western Resource Advocates regarding renewable-energy development in the state.
“This wind farm is in a remote area and is somewhat hidden,” Metzger said. The ranch is southeast of Flagstaff in the Kinnickinick Lake area, and the wind farm is being studied for an area directly east of Mormon Lake on private and state land.
A 500 megawatt plant could power 125,000 or more Arizona homes.
Foresight Wind Energy, a San Francisco company with Flagstaff offices, is proposing the project. The company put on hold a smaller project called the Sunshine Wind Park in 2005, but says that project is fully permitted and work could begin this year or next.
Foresight is currently studying the wind and where lines can be installed for the Grapevine project.
