PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. – A new wind farm to be developed in Cape Breton will eventually supply Nova Scotia Power Inc. with enough electricity to serve about 6,000 homes.
The utility has signed a long-term agreement with Nova Scotia-based Renewable Energy Services Ltd., or RESL.
The company will add 11 new turbines at its current site at Statia Terminals in Port Hawkesbury, N.S., where one turbine is already in operation.
The 80-metre high turbines will deliver 22 megawatts of electrical capacity.
Nova Scotia Power says the agreement is the first of a series to be announced with renewable energy companies to supply electricity to 60,000 homes by 2010.
RESL currently operates five turbines across the province including, Brookfield, Goodwood, Marshville, Digby and Port Hawkesbury.
