A wind farm gold rush

Your article on wind turbines was most disturbing (News, last week).

We in Cumbria are to have 35% of the onshore wind farms needed to meet the government’s target by 2010, chosen because of the scattered population. With the Robin Rigg site we will be surrounded by 100 turbines, with more on the way.

The subsidies, the preferential prices for wind-generated energy and the almost total removal of ability to veto planning applications locally have created a modern-day Klondike.

As few farms achieve more than 30% efficiency, how can they justify the proliferation of these inefficient eyesores that have to shut down when winds are too strong? Let us build a new tranche of nuclear stations and invest in renewable energy.

WRONG AND GREEDY: Dale Vince, the Ecotricity founder, says people who disagree with him are “simply wrong and selfish”. I suggest he is “simply wrong and greedy” since any profits he makes will depend on levies on consumers.
