Wind turbine restrictions proposed

FREETOWN – With alternative technologies growing more popular, town voters will be asked at a Special Town Meeting to approve a zoning bylaw governing wind turbines. “We’re trying to be proactive. We want to make sure this is done right,” said selectmen chairman Lawrence N. Ashley. Ashley said there are two wind turbines in town, a number that could easily grow as people try to cut dependence on foreign oil and find renewable sources of energy. The proposed bylaw would restrict the turbines and blades to a height of 425 feet and require that they be on lots large enough to ensure they will not land on a neighboring property if they fall. The meeting will likely be set for late February or early March, Ashley said. – Elaine Cushman Carroll
