Energy giant Centrica says it hopes to get planning permission within the next few months to begin work on a third major wind farm off the Lincolnshire coast.
The company is already building two 27-turbine developments about 5km off the coast of Skegness.
These wind farms, known as Lynn and Inner Dowsing, could provide 180 megawatts of electricity an hour – enough to power 130,000 homes – and could be up and running by the end of the year.
Three much larger offshore wind farms are also planned for the area.
Centrica submitted a planning application to the then Department of Trade and Industry for the 250-megawatt Lincs wind farm in January 2007.
It is hoping to get a decision by March and could begin construction next year.
Meanwhile, the company is continuing to work on plans for two more giant offshore wind farms.
Mike Dennehy, spokesman for Centrica, said: “Two other projects, the 500-megawatt Docking Shoal and 500-megawatt Race Bank proposals, are undergoing the final stages of environmental assessment and could be subject to consent applications in 2008.”
