The Bank of Canton has received a $40,000 grant from the Massachusetts Technology Council that it hopes will lead to the construction of a wind turbine to power its corporate offices at 490 Turnpike St..
The bank Thursday will ask the zoning board for a permit to construct a temporary tower as part of a one-year study, according to attorney Paul A. Schneiders, representing the bank.
The bank “wants to make a dramatic statement about their support of renewable energy” and also lower electricity costs, Schneiders said.
The 173-foot-tall temporary tower would test the winds – and neighbors’ reaction – for six months to a year. If the test period is successful, a permanent 210-foot-tall wind turbine would be constructed, he said.
