Turbine in works

IPSWICH – Officials from the School Department met with engineers from Meridian Associates Inc., representatives of the Department of Utilities, and residents last week to discuss options related to a proposal to build a wind turbine that would provide power to the middle and high schools, with some energy sold back to the town-owned electric company. The School Department has received approval for a $1.6 million interest-free loan through the federal Clean Renewable Energy Bonds program. The entire project would cost $3.2 million, said Superintendent Rick Korb, and the energy savings would pay for the project over a 10-year period. Korb said the group will ask whether the schools can request an extension, since the deadline to accept the loan is the end of 2008. It also will ask whether the schools can partner with the town, which also applied for a CREBs loan but was not approved. In addition, it will investigate whether it can expand the project and possibly put the turbine at another site in town.
