Don't be surprised votes by committee weren't unanimous

The Wind Energy ad hoc committee has completed its work and it’s now up to the Calumet County Board to decide the future of wind energy development in Calumet County.

The committee has spent many, many hours compiling the most recent research data available to come up with recommendations that will protect the health and safety of the citizens of our county.

We’re now relying on the County Board to take the advice of that committee and adopt the recommendations that it has brought forth.

Some of the recommendations were passed unanimously, while others were passed with only a majority vote.

There will be those who may question the recommendations that did not pass unanimously. Remember, the committee was composed of people supporting both sides of the issue.

Keeping in mind that there were a few people on the committee who could have a financial interest in the development of these projects, unanimous approval for some of the recommendations would have been impossible.

Therefore, if an argument for not supporting a recommendation is based on not having unanimous approval, then rightfully so, consideration should also be given to the fact that some opposing votes may have been based on a committee member’s potential for financial gain, and the restrictions that certain recommendations could cause.

Unless board members have taken it upon themselves to do their own in-depth research, we would expect that they will accept and adopt all of the resolutions that will be presented to them.

If some should choose to vote against any of the recommendations, then we would also expect that they will be able to provide the citizens of Calumet County with substantial documentation supporting their objections to those recommendations.
