Countryside Campaign Welcomes National Park Turbine Objections

The Devon Branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) today welcomed the decision by Exmoor National Park Authority to object to the two latest windfarm proposals close to its southern boundary.

At the meeting of the National Park Planning Committee the members voted overwhelmingly to support their officer’s recommendation to object to the Three Moors application for 9 turbines in North Devon and the Bickham Moor application for 4 turbines in Mid Devon.

Speaking after the meeting Bob Barfoot, Chairman of CPRE for North Devon, welcomed the decision. He said that “CPRE is delighted at the strong stance taken by the committee over this issue. We support the drive to decrease the dependence of the UK on fossil fuels, but renewable energy schemes must be appropriately sited. It is our view that these proposals are simply too close to the National Park.”

He continued that “the members of the National Park planning committee clearly understood their duty to protect the National Park, and agreed with their officer’s recommendation which said that the wind turbines are considered to have an adverse and significant impact on the setting of the National Park and of views out from the higher moorland along the southern fringe of the Park. The turbines, if constructed, would harm the identified special qualities of the National Park.”

Mr Barfoot ended by saying that “the National Park Authority had now objected to all four of the current proposals close to the southern boundary, and that CPRE now hoped that the local planning authorities would take note of the objections from the National Park and vote to refuse these applications in due course.”
