TYRONE, Pa. – When Gamesa held an open house for the public in December to learn about the Sandy Ridge Windfarm, dozens of people came out in opposition. However, a big concern for council members was that many of the people opposed weren’t even Borough residents. Since then, some concerned citizens had the idea to show them that many residents feel the same way.
Robert Roseberry has been sitting in his van at the intersection of Clay Avenue and Hoover’s Lane gathering signatures on a petition everyday, and he’s still not done. Roseberry said he’s not very political; he’s just fighting for a cause. The cause has garnered more than 11,000 signatures.
Roseberry said he’s surprised by just how many people don’t want the turbines atop Ice Mountain. He said he doesn’t approach them, they find him.
The mayor of Tyrone said it is important that the council hear what the community has to say because council members are still weighing their votes. Additionally, there are two new councilmen who are just getting up to speed.
“It may take a while for everybody to really feel comfortable and make a decision with what they want to do. It is a significant decision because the contract they’re proposing is 29 years, so it is a big-time deal that will affect our community for a long time,” said Tyrone Mayor Jim Kilmartin.
Kilmartin said there is no date set for the vote, but right now the council seems to be split 50-50.
More than half of the signatures are from Borough residents, but the others come from Snyder Township residents.
