Zoning hearings Wednesday

The Ellis County Planning and Zoning Commission will host three public hearings at 7 p.m. Wednesday regarding conditional-use permits being sought by Iberdrola Renewable Energies USA.

The hearings will be in the county meeting room at 601 Main.

The applications are for three meteorological towers to be constructed on land that was included in the company’s conditional-use permit for a wind generation project, which was denied by the Ellis County Commission in a 2-1 vote in September.

Hays Wind LLC Project Manager Krista Gordon said the towers would stand 60 meters tall and be used for further data collection.

According to the applications, the towers would measure and record wind speeds and direction data, which will be used to “validate the wind resource in the southern portion of the Hays Wind Project.”

One tower would be located in the southwest quarter of Section 15, Township 14 South, Range 19 West, a plot of land owned by John W. Kraus non-marital trust.

Another would be located on land owned by York College, based in York, Neb. The property is located in the southeast quarter of Section 20, Township 14 South, Range 19 West.

The third tower would be located in the southwest quarter of Section 28, Township 13 South, Range 19 West, on land owned by Dorothy Bemis.

The applications were filed with the Ellis County Environmental Office in November.
