Wind farm developer talks dollars

A Kansas company looking at developing a $350 million wind farm in Putnam and La Salle counties discussed its plans with area property owners over a chicken dinner Monday at the McNabb Fire Station.

Approximately 200 people showed up to hear about TradeWind Energy’s proposed wind farm, which could head in a southeast direction from Mark in Putnam County to just west of Interstate 39 in La Salle County’s Hope and Eden townships.

If it proceeds, the 80-to-100 turbine project could be as little as two years away, but more likely three, according to Mark Hannifan, director of development for TradeWind.

Hannifan said TradeWind has been studying the wind capacity and transmission capability in the area for about two years.

“We’ve been here many, many times,” he said.

Duane Enger, development manager for TradeWind Energy, told those in attendance about the pay scale the company would offer to those who are selected to participate in the proposed wind farm. During the development, landowners would earn $8 per acre for the first five years. In year six, the amount would increase to $10 per acre.

Subsequent increases would be as follows: year seven, $11 per acre; year eight, $12 per acre; year nine, $13 per acre; and year 10, $14 per acre.
