What a forward looking and wonderful idea by the Welsh Assembly Government to provide support for indigenous woodlands by creating a Welsh National Forest of native trees to act as a carbon sink – deserving no less than the stamping of feet and whole hearted, rapturous applause – apart from everything else, what a boost to the tourist industry and a legacy to future generations!
Although this scheme was launched by the First Minister, Rhodri Morgan last month at the first site, near Usk in Monmouthshire, the original idea for the scheme came from Cardiff schoolgirl, Natalie Vaughan, who wrote to the Welsh Assembly, suggesting that planting a tree for every child born would be a good way to make young people think about their environment and the role they have in preserving it.
So far, so good and very commendable! But was it not this very same First Minister who only just recently announced the surrendering of Forestry Commission land and the felling of hundreds of trees (the lungs of Wales) to enable the banal construction of monstrous and ineffective wind generators – surely this pronouncement clearly demonstrates nothing more than a proposition to an act of mindless vandalism coupled with a total ignorance of wind technology and energy requirements – what unbelievable and blatant hypocrisy!

Perhaps Natalie could write again to the Welsh Assembly suggesting this Forestry Commission land be planted with indigenous trees rather than being given over to industrialisation with useless and unnecessary wind generators? We live in hope and Natalie gets my vote!
