Town of Frankfort agrees to participate in wind turbine feasibility study

The Frankfort Town Council has agreed to go along with the Frankfort Village Board of Trustees and participate in a feasibility study on whether land in Frankfort could be used for wind turbines.

The town board recently received a letter from the village board asking if the town would be interested in participating in the feasibility study and the town board approved supporting the village in the study.

At the board’s past meeting, Councilman John Wallace said the town is in favor of supporting the village with the study, but that doesn’t mean the town is in favor of potentially having wind turbines.

“We need to test the whole area,” said Wallace.

Supervisor Joseph Kinney said the board should be cautious with the subject and the endorsement is for the feasibility study only, not an endorsement of wind turbines themselves.

“The town expresses interest in the concept of a wind farm study in conjunction with the village,” said Kinney.

Councilman John DiSano asked where the turbines could be put and Wallace responded that the study is the only way to find out the answers.

The village hired Empire Wind this past spring to conduct a red flag analysis to determine whether wind power could be feasible for the village.

After studying computer models that calculated wind speed in the village, the company told the village a wind project could be done and asked village officials to approach the town on whether it would consider getting involved as well.

The village began thinking about the possibility of wind turbines when the New York Power Authority notified the village that rates could increase.

In other town business, members of the board recently sat with representatives to review lingering issues with the town’s highway garage. The board is awaiting proposals on what can be done.
