Wind turbine projects make short list

Several wind farm proposals in the Red River Valley have made it to the next stage of the wind Request for Proposal (RFP) process, after Manitoba Hydro announced a shortlist of 10 possible sites.

Seven wind developers represent the 10 locations across Manitoba, and they have been invited to provide final offers to develop and supply wind-generated energy to Manitoba Hydro.

Glenn Schneider, division manager of public affairs said one of the projects is in the Rosenfeld area, proposed by Sequoia/RES.

A second one proposed by Babcock and Brown, a leading wind energy company, would be built near St. Joseph.

Two different companies have proposals near Dominion City, one called AIM/G and another called Airtricity.

Airtricity also has locations in the RM of MacDonald and near St. Ambroise that made the final cut. The St. Leon and Darlingford areas are also in the top 10. Although the process has been taking a long time, Schneider said this stage is much quicker. “I think we’d be able to make some decision on it in late winter,” he said.

Most of these proposals will not come to reality, at least as part of this process.

The initial request of proposals was meant to satisfy a supply of up to 300 megawatts.

Interested wind farm developers handed in 84 submissions for more than 10,000 megawatts.
