Thieves risked their own lives breaking into a wind farm near Blackwater.They breached security at the Four Burrows site to enter the sub station compound.
They vandalised two transformer houses, cutting and stealing the cables.
The damage meant the farm had to close for four days for health and safety reasons.
Communications manager for Renewable Energy Systems which run the site, Anna Stanford, said: “By breaching the compound security they put themselves at very high risk of death by electrocution.
“We have very high security for a reason but cannot prevent something like this happening.”
Police are unclear exactly when the break in happened but the company was made aware of it on Friday.
“Because the damage was to electrical equipment we shut it down as a precaution,” said Ms Stanford.
“It was started again on Tuesday afternoon following checks.
“We were not able to generate any electric during that time, but it was important that it was shut down for safety reasons.”
The site opened in March, 2005, and has five turbines.
