Study looks at wind energy in Michigan

The Land Policy Institute at Michigan State University on Wednesday released a fact sheet based on a recent study on wind energy in Michigan. The study projects the number of wind turbines needed, the land footprint they would require, and the likely location of wind turbines in order to meet standards proposed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm in Michigan’s 21st Century Electric Energy Plan.

To meet the proposed standards, 1,250 wind turbines will need to be installed; 313 acres of wind tower land footprints will be needed; and 50,279 acres of wind farm area will be involved, of which 49,966 acres would continue to be usable for farming, grazing, forestry, or related alternative uses of the land.

The study is available at www.landpolicy.msu.edu.
