Noise challenge over turbines

Officials are set to take noise measurements from homes near the site of two proposed giant turbines to gauge what impact they would have on residents.

Wind energy firm Ecotricity has been battling for more than five years to try to get approval for the 100m masts at Wood Farm, Shipdham.

Two applications were refused by Breckland and both went to public inquiries.

After the second inquiry permission was given but a condition to prevent noise nuisance was challenged by local residents Nicholas and Lee Hoare and the Planning Inspectorate quashed the decision and a third inquiry will be held next year.

On Monday at Breckland’s development control committee members agreed to gather evidence on noise in an effort to present a report to the inspector and find a solution.

The council’s monitoring officer Tim Leeder said noise would be a “material consideration” at the inquiry and it was important to use experts to get evidence and set standards to protect local people.

Councillor John Labouchere said it was vital to be reasonable to residents and also police the conditions on noise from the turbines.

Meanwhile, proposals for six new turbines at Sporle, have been deferred after further comments were made by the Ministry of Defence.

Next Generation wants to put the 120m turbines up and Breckland planning officers have recommended approval.

But there has been concerns raised from the MoD and the ministry has now provided more information which officers will have to consider.
