Campaigners fight eco-town plan

Campaigners have launched an online petition in a bid to stop an eco-town being built in south Derbyshire.

Plans for the 5,700-home development on a 865-acre site at Grovewood, near Drakelow, were unveiled by Banks Developments last month.

More than 100 people have now signed the petition, which states: “The great beauty of the National Forest is under threat from a proposal by Banks developments.

“This development flies in the face for the reason for the national forest and also the area’s infrastructure can in no way support such a development.

“This desecration will mean the destruction of an area of the national forest and ruining an area of rugged beauty.”

Under the plans the homes would be built using low and zero-carbon technologies.

Energy for the community would be created through renewable sources such as wind turbines.

The Chesterfield-based developer has submitted a bid for the eco-town to the Department of Communities and Local Government.

The Government will decide early next year whether or not to back the proposal.
