Wind turbine regulations delayed

UNION TWP., Champaign County – A regional advisory board recommended officials wait for more information before amending zoning restrictions to allow for wind turbines to be built in this Champaign County township.

The Logan-Union-Champaign Regional Planning Commission, a West Liberty-based advisory panel, recommended the Union Township Zoning Commission reject two zoning amendments it submitted – one from the commission itself and one from Union Neighbors United, a group of township residents concerned about wind turbine development.

“We just think more information needs to be gathered,” LUC Director Jenny Snapp said.

The LUC had urged for the creation of the Wind Turbine Study Group in Champaign County. that group now meets weekly to study wind turbine development in the area.

Union Neighbors United supported the LUC recommendation, Union Neighbors member Diane McConnell said.

“We feel the LUC was right to wait for a protocol decision from … the county wind study group because this is a very delicate issue, a very important issue and a very technical issue,” she said.

The zoning commission hearing about the amendments will go on as scheduled at 7 p.m. Monday in the Champaign County Community Center auditorium, 1512 South U.S. Route 68, Urbana.

Limited public participation will be allowed at the hearing, and the commission will take the LUC recommendation into consideration before voting on the amendments, zoning commission president Bill Runyan said.
