Katainen: increasing wind farms too expensive

Finance Minister Jyrki Katainen considers Centre Party proposals to dramatically increase the number of wind farms as unrealistic.

Katainen, a member of the National Coalition Party, told the newspaper Kaleva that suggestions for a twenty-fold increase in the number of wind farms would be too expensive at current wind energy prices.

He calculated that increasing wind power from current levels of 100 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts would require at least 600 to 700 million euros over the next 13 years.

In Katainen’s view, Finland has only limited opportunities to increase its use of renewable energy. He said building hydroelectric power in the north should not be ruled out.
